Just replaced an aging SBG10 with the SBV3202. The two ports on the SBG were used for 1. google mesh Wi-Fi and the other for a switch. The switch ran a voip router and 3 computers. With the SBV I only get one wired port so it went to the switch. The SBV has phone so that eliminated voip router. The only change was to move the mesh system to the switch, but it now also provides Wi-Fi. Just used as a range extender with old modem. I am not able to keep the internet connection stable coming out of switch. I can reset it, unplug, replug the switch and ethernet cables and it just won't stay online. I get a few mins or an hour and the connection drops. Switch never gave me any issue with the old surfboard. Is there a setting or firmware or software that I need? Or is there a preferred switch to match with the new modem? Thanks for any help
Well you replaced a modem/router combo device with a modem only device. You need something handling dhcp/private IP addresses. A modem is assigned a public ip address from the ISP and they only assign a single one. Its up to the router to take that public ip address and assign private addresses to the devices on the network.
You need to go SBV--->router (in router mode, not ap mode)---->then switches/devices.
This makes perfect sense, thank you. 25 year ago me is probably saying duh to current me reading your explanation. Any suggestions or advice for a router? I do have several, old and varying routers, but don't want to create a chokepoint or waste more trial and error time with incompatible combinations. Might as well have the community's input for best setup from here
What current mesh system do you have?
how big is your home?
What are you using it for? Gaming? Streaming? Vblogging? Etc.
What speeds do you pay for?
Family of 4. 2000sqft L shaped ranch. Google mesh Wi-Fi. 4 points. Furthest away point is probably 50ft from modem and thru floor. Pay for 1GB download. 2 gaming computers but nothing over the top. Phones, TV's but cable still. I think 10 devices were connected via Wi-Fi last time I looked. Looks like your setup may be similar to what I need.
My setup is quite excessive and expensive. If I didn’t test so much equipment, I wouldn’t have it or need it.
What google mesh do you have? There’s several.
You can go modem---->google mesh router (might have to rerun setup) and then switch/devices.
I do see what I assume is a pass through ethernet port on the mesh points. Not sure if that is what you meant when you say they could run into the switch. That would be great if so. I do realize that your setup is significant but I noticed that the order of things in your signature line matches the order of what I need.
