This page for the SB6183 at the top lists the download speed as 686Mbps but if you scroll down to the specs it lists the download speed as 400Mbps, so which is it? https://shop.surfboard.com/sb6183-surfboard-cable-modem/. Also this other page lists 400Mbps as well https://www.surfboard.com/products/cable-modems/sb6183/ but during speed tests, I can get over 500Mbps so that makes me think it is 686Mbps but all the pages make this pretty confusing.

Also, what is the max upload speed? Since there are fewer upstream channels in the modem than downstream channels, the max upload speed is usually less than the download speed. Based on this article, I’m guessing 200Mbps but does anyone know for sure? https://kb.netgear.com/000060401/What-is-the-difference-between-DOCSIS-3-0-and-3-1

Problem isn’t with the arris. Its with the ISP’s. They can change their requirements for speed at any time. so even though it has the capability to hit 686mbps, the isp might only certify it for 400.

Download will always (with docsis 3.0/3.1) be less than upload by a significant margin. For example, I pay for gigabit speeds but my upload is only 40mbps. You’re going to see similar with that device. If you’re paying for 500mbps, you’ll probably only see 20-30mbps based on what your ISP supports.

Okay so for the hardware limitations of the modem, it would be 686Mbps? I am only interested in the hardware limitations of the modem itself

Also, I see a lot of Arris Surfboard modems do not list the max upload speed, any idea where I can get that information? I do not see a way to reach out to Arris to ask

theoretically, docsis 3.0 can support up to 108mbps on a 4 channel upload. Will it hit that? not even close.

And the 686mbps download? Again, thats theoretical and not saying your isp will get close to that. ISP’s like cox are starting to require docsis 3.1 specs for speeds >200mbps. So even if your ISP currently allows you 500mbps download on your current device, it doesn’t mean they always will.
