Question

Connecting IOT device, need detailed log on G18

Forum|alt.badge.img

I have an Arris G18 router, trying to connect an Etekcity smart outlet.  Would like to see a detailed log of why it is not able to connect.  The logs I see do not have any information on devices connecting.

Most IoT devices require WPA2 Personal (AES) or a lower security type.

You can change the security type in two ways: through the Surfboard Central app or the web interface (GUI).

Using the Surfboard Central App:

  1. Open the Surfboard Central app.
  2. Tap the Network icon.
  3. Tap the Main Wi-Fi Network + button to expand the card.
  4. Tap the Pencil icon to make edits.
    • Note: The 5GHz tab is selected by default for the 5 GHz band.
  5. On the Edit Home Network screen, tap the Security Type drop-down menu and select WPA2-PSK (AES).
  6. Tap the Save Changes button. An Alert pop-up box will appear.
  7. Tap the Continue button.
  8. The Network screen will return with the updated Security Type.

Using the Web Interface (GUI):

  1. Launch a web browser (e.g., Internet Explorer, Firefox, Safari).
  2. Enter http://192.168.0.1  into the address bar and press Enter. The https:// Redirect page will appear.
  3. The Username field will have "admin" populated. Enter your custom password in the Password field.
  4. After logging in, navigate to Gateway > Connection > Wi-Fi > Networks.
  5. Under the Primary Home Wi-Fi Network section, click the Edit button for the 2.4 GHz Frequency Band.
  6. Click the Security Mode drop-down menu and select WPA2-PSK (AES).
  7. Enter the four-digit CAPTCHA code in the Type CAPTCHA Here field.
  8. Click the Save button to apply the new settings.

That did not work. I turn the 5.0ghz off, set the 2.4ghz security to WPA2-PSK (the default was WPA2/WPA3 Mixed Personal (AES)). Getting the same issue. Is there a higher level of logging that can be seen to give more detail to what is happening?

Etekcity isn’t known for the highest quality devices.

Make sure you don’t have any spaces or special characters in the ssid or password. Not all IoT devices (especially sketchy ones) play nicely with those.

try setting up the guest network with a simple ssid/password option and see if it works

I have tried your suggestion, also tried using a different app, and a different router.  Looks like the ETekCity outlets may be the issue.  I am going to give up and order a different brand of outlets.  I have some old ETekCity outlets that work just fine, the new ones I just got do not seem to work as well, tired of wasting my time and now yours.   Thanks for your help.
