Hi, I am attempting to set up a new Mesh wifi network in my three floor home.  We’re pushing 5,000 sq ft and finding dead spots in the basement (TV) and on the 2nd floor (far end of house), and the old wifi Netgear extender just isn’t stable or great.   I read online that I would need to disable the router function in my ARRIS G36 SURFboard cable modem/router combo first, then set-up bridge mode to connect it to a new Mesh network system.   Any directions or guidance on this process?   I don’t know how to disable the router function within my G36.   I appreciate any network expert advise, thank you.

What I’d do? The G36 is a pretty solid performing router.

Instead of disabling its router function, put your mesh system in access point mode.

Then you’d just make sure the 2 wireless networks use a different ssid and are on different wireless channels.

The devices close to the G36 and are stationary, could connect to it. The ones on the peripheral or that roam, could connect to the mesh. That devices the load between the 2 and tends to have higher performance.

Thanks @plemans .    If I had two wireless networks, isnt’ that like my current wifi-ext set-up, and wouldn’t that defeat one of the benefits of a Mesh network, where I wouldn’t need multiple SSIDs?  Also, where can one find directions on setting up access point mode on network, I’ve always seen that option but never used it, unsure what that is or now that works, is it like a bridge???

thanks!

Kind of but not really. the nice thing is you just set the devices close the the router and that don’t move to connect to the G36. It’ll offload some from the mesh system.

You don’t have to. If you prefer it all to be on the mesh, you can enable bridge mode. The guide is right here:

Just seems a little sad to have a nice modem/router like that and to only use it as a modem.
