I wanted to get away from provider fees of using their modems, i.e. Ziply Fiber, and decided to buy the Arris G34 combo after seeing decent reviews. Looked easy enough. I haven't been able to watch TV or use my laptop now for a month without having to go through hoops and trials to get some sort of connection.  As a person who has very little knowledge about this topic, any message board info is like reading Latin.  Im about ready to just cancel my internet all together to save that money and say fukitall. Going to back to simpler times seems less stressful.

Since I kicked cable to the curb, I’m a bit out of touch with the current models of modems, but I do know, that Ziply, or any fiber optic provider, doesn’t use modems at all.  They use what’s called an ONT (Optical Network Terminal), which is about the size of a modem that is connected with a fiber optic cable to the outside of the house, and an ethernet cable, which connects to the router, and it’s provided - and installed - by the “fiber guy.”  The router is just a router: no modem or other function, which you can either rent from the provider or buy on your own.  If you use their router then you’ll get their support for it.  If you get your own, then your support is dependent on where you bought it and/or the manufacturer.
Now, I did some checking on the Arris G34 and it appears to be a combination cable modem and router.  Notice I said cable.  The modem would have to be disabled to use it with fiber, and that model would probably cause a bottleneck at anything over a gigabit line anyway.  The newer technologies use 6e or even (tri-band) 7 now, which pretty much put plain ol’ 6 out to pasture.

The G34 functions as both a modem and a router. If you're using a fiber optic connection via Ethernet, you can disable the modem functionality and switch the G34 to router-only mode to ensure compatibility with your setup.

For your reference, please see the instructions below on how to change the G34 to router mode.
