G54 Says incorrect password for 2.4ghz and 6ghz networks when password is correct

I enter the correct password to connect to the 2.4 and or 6ghz networks and the response is that the password is incorrect when it’s 100% correct. I have restarted EVERYTHING multiple times and have even tried changing the password on the Gateway and it still says the passwords are wrong.

make sure the password and ssid doesn’t have any special characters or spaces in them. 

Is it on all devices, just one device?

all devices, no special characters, same password works for 5ghz high and low networks.

Are you using bandsteering? If not, enable that. The whole point of wifi 7 is bandsteering/mlo. 

try that

I am not using band-steering. I have a highly connected household with 70+ devices connected and I’ve parsed them out very systematically to different bands. Some devices have to be on the same band to interface with one another. The only way I’ve found to do that is to shut off the auto steering.

One thing I failed to mention. This password for the 2.4ghz used to work just fine. Suddenly failing.

I’ve been using mesh systems since they first came out. I’ve got over 150+ devices on my network and have zero issues with devices having to be on the same band. It was an issue when mesh first started (over a decade ago) but not anymore. And the whole point of upgrading to wifi 7 is the MLO/bandsteering to be dynamic. I’ve used different netgear Orbi’s, arris W31, Arris G54, and tp-link.

 

Have you tried going in and changing the passwords to something else and then changing them back?

Thanks, yes. I’ve tried changing the PW, then changing the PW back. All to no avail.

If you just change it, are the devices able to connect to the new PW?

No. Still can’t connect to 2.4 no matter the password. I flipped band-steering back on and restarted everything. Still can’t connect.

Are you using wpa3 or wpa2/wpa3 mixed mode? 

What happens if you turn on the guest network. Does it connect to that?

It’s set to WPA2/WPA3-Mixed Personal (AES/SAE) I tried switching that up too… no difference. I just tried connecting to Guest. Message says “connecting” for about 15 seconds then the connection reverts back to the network that was already connected. No error message… just doesn’t connect. Tried several times… same result. Failing behind the scenes but not throwing an error.

You can always try the old “scorched earth” tactic and do a full reset of the G54.

Yeah… I have been contemplating that. Trying of course, to avoid that if at all humanly possible. Appreciate your thoughts and ideas however. I was hoping someone ran into this issue and had a solution that I might employ.

Have you checked the 2.4 GHz password through the GUI interface or the SBC app to see if it's still set to the default or if it has been customized?

Also, could you let me know which device you're trying to connect to the 2.4 GHz network?

I recommend changing the 2.4 GHz password and then attempting to reconnect your device.

Yes. Modified and checked through GUI. Tried changing it, didn't work. Changed it back, didn't work. On a lark I even tried the default. Nothing.

Thats the same firmware I have on my g54 but your time display shows up different. Interesting. Who’s your isp?

I have a few questions to understand your network setup. 

  1. Are you able to connect any Wi-Fi device to 2.4 GHz network? 
  2. How many characters does your Wi-Fi password have?
  3. What is the model and OS of the Wi-Fi clients are you trying to connect to 6 GHz network?
  4. Do you have any Wi-Fi AP that are also broadcasting for your 70+ devices?
  5. How many client devices are listed on the Connected Devices page?

I recommend splitting the Wi-Fi SSID so that each band have a unique SSID.

Then change the Security Type to WPA2-PSK on the 2.4 GHz.  Please follow the steps in this article G54: Unable to Connect to the Wi-Fi Network.

If you have Wi-Fi AP or network switch, turn them off and disconnect from the G54 for troubleshooting purpose to remove any issues with them.

Hi.

  1. No. I can no longer connect to this network from ANY device. I just tried from an apple device and whereas android just says the password incorrect, I got the attached error message on my iPod Touch… https://photos.app.goo.gl/tedP4LKCcFAQ4v2X7 not sure if that link will work. If not, I will type it out. I don’t see an option to attach a screenshot here and I get an error trying to embed media.
  2. Password has 20 characters and used to work. It also works fine on the other networks.
  3. I think I mostly answered that in my response to #1 before reading this question. Android, iOS, Windows 11.
  4. Yes. To provide broader coverage in my home I also have a Netgear Nighthawk RS280 broadcasting 2.4ghz, 5ghz, and 6ghz networks. It is connected to the Arris router via ethernet cable.
  5. Only 6 devices connected as most are connected to the Nighthawk.

I will try your suggested fix as soon as I get an opportunity and will report back.

I’m having the same issue but for 6G only. The password is correct but says it’s not. I’ve tried changing it and back again and nada.

Tried shutting down RS280 and connecting. No dice. All networks already have unique SSIDs. Changed security type per your suggestion. Still no luck. I will dig into the article you reference as soon as I have some time.

Are all networks on the Nighthawk and G54 unique?  Was the Nighthawk on your network when the clients connected to the 2.4 GHz SSID?  Another suggestion is to delete wi-fi networks on the client devices and reconnect.
