I recently setup the modem/router and I get excellent speed on all devices except one, which is a HP laptop (when it is far from router).

The speed that I am getting in the laptop (Windows PC) is excellent when it is on the same floor. But when it is in the second floor, the speed is 20-30 mbps. Interesting thing is that, the speeds are pretty good when I check from an ipad and chrombook while in the second floor.

It appears that the PC is having hard time to get the performance just when it is in the second floor. Any idea what could be causing the slowness in the PC while there are no issues in chrome book and ipad.

Thanks

Could you help me with the product model number to assist you further?

Hello,

The model number is G54.

Thanks

Is it connected to the 2.4ghz, the 5ghz, or the 6ghz?

Reason asking is the 2.4ghz is a significantly slower network and a floor away, if there’s interference, those might be its speeds over 2.4ghz.

what wireless card is in the laptop?

Hello,

It was connecting to 2.4 and 5 intermittently. So every restart has a potential to connect to different speeds is what I observed. Today when I checked it is sticking to 5 Gz (restarted twice) and speed is around 130 MBPS which is a reasonable speed I guess.

A few days back, I enabled ‘split’ (I think that is what it is called) using surfboard admin console. I am not sure that is what is helping it to stick to 5 Ghz.

Regarding adapter, please see a screenshot below.

I do not know if the speed will deteriorate when I check again. If there are settings I need to make sure in the admin console, please let me know.

A couple things.

  1. I’d leave the bands combined. the whole point of wifi 7 is for devices to be able to roam between the bands as needed. While 2.4ghz is significantly slower, it does better and have further broadcasting. So it’ll work further. But 5ghz is much faster. Devices will roam between the bands as needed based on their own built in bandsteering protocol.
  2. With that said, the rtl8821ce is kind of  wifi card. If you’re halfway handy, you could probably upgrade the wifi card to a decent intel AX210 (has 6ghz) for around that $20. Look up your model laptop and see if there’s any disassemble videos/posts and you can find out how easy it is to take the back plate off to upgrade the wifi card.
  3. those speeds over 5ghz is pretty decent for a floor away and with materials in the way. 5ghz doesn’t broadcast as far or through as much materials so its just something to keep in mind. with the 5ghz dropping that much, those speeds you were getting (20-30) sounds about right for the 2.4ghz.

Overall, I don’t think you have any issues other than distance. we expect speeds to drop with distance/obstruction/interference. its why mesh systems became so popular. People could place several around a home and have blazing fast speeds everywhere and not just by the router. But with that said, 130mbps is still pretty solid. Streaming 4k only takes 25-50mbps. So if you’re getting 130, you’re doing pretty good and shouldn’t notice much difference unless you’re downloading large files.

I replied to you but something in it triggered a mod approval requirement. It might take a while to post.
