I have spectrum internet at my lake house. 8 years ago installed a SB 6141, working great until last few months. now intermittent disconnections. I am guessing that the modem is likely outdated, and I need to upgrade? does this make sense?

Yes maybe, but you can give it a try using a test modem and monitor the connection if that works fine you can get different modem.
