DOCSIS 3.0 green light vs DOCSIS 3.1 signal on SB8200

I just purchased a SURFboard 8200 v3. The Receive and Send lights both show as green, indicating DOCSIS 3.0 is being received. My ISP is Spectrum, and their local office stated that they have only been using DOCSIS 3.1 in my state for several years. I have seen some other answers regarding this issue related to “provisioning”, and that the issue lies with the ISP, not the equipment. I’m unsure of the proper question to ask the ISP. What is provisioning and what do I need to ask the ISP to do to try and address this issue?

What speeds do you pay for and what speeds do you get? 

Them saying they “only use docsis 3.1” is bogus or none of their docsis 3.0 devices would work. 

And they still do (i know because the in-laws in my area have docsis 3.0). 

Why do you think it needs to lock in at docsis 3.1 speeds?

I pay for 1 Meg service, at $107.99/month, for which I was told I would need new equipment that would be DOCSIS 3.1.

I spent a few hundred dollars on new equipment (SURFboard 8200 v3 modem & TP-Link Archer BE6500 router) because it was my understanding that I wouldn’t get the speed without changing it.

 

Using Measurement Lab and running the test twice, I got averages of 90.1 download and 31.1 upload.

Using speedtest.net and running the test once, I got 97.1 download and 34.2 upload.

 

I don’t understand why I’m getting the green lights for DOCSIS3.0 on the modem when Spectrum says they are only using DOCSIS3.1.

To my engineering way of thinking, it’s strictly an either/or situation - either I am getting 3.1 or I am not.

To me, the light color is the indicator, telling me I’m getting 3.0, and I am under the impression that I am paying for 3.1

If you tell me everything is really fine and the light color is not an issue, I’ll accept that (telling my engineering brain that it’s time to let it go).

I do appreciate your help on this.

I would log in to your gateway and check your signal strength and active channels.

SB8200 should be 192.168.100.1 in the address of your browser.

User Admin and your password is probably the last 8 digits of your serial number.

I wouldn’t reset the modem to the factory firmware until I checked with Spectrum to make sure the latest firmware will get pushed after the reset.  Spectrum probably has a BB for your area that is more knowledgeable then chat or our community.

signal strengths should be above 37 DB and I think the 16 download channels will be listed with data for them once you get in.
