I have Cox for Internet. Cox support told me to use a switch (not a router) to connect two computers to the modem. It seems like a simple thing to do, and I want to be sure to get a compatible switch. Any recommendations for a switch?

I'm also considering having a Cox technician come to my house to do the setup in case there are things I don't know that need to be done -- currently have their Panoramic modem/router. Is that a good idea?

A switch won't allow you to connect two computers simultaneously on the SB8200, as both ports are assigned the same IP address.

To use a second IP address, you would need to subscribe to one from your cable provider. However, not all cable providers offer additional IP addresses for residential services.

Thank you. I’ll contact Cox again.

why aren’t you using a router? A router is highly advised for their built in firewall to protect your devices.

You could pick on used for extremely cheap and gain security and the ability to connect more devices.

The Cox support person I spoke with told me to use a switch, not a router. I will be contacting support again to verify.

Cox support for first line support is just someone reading off a prompt.

It should go modem----->router--->devices/switch (if you’re needing more ports)

Okay, thank you for your help.
