Bought a Surfboard SB8200 on Prime Day to replace the Motorola Modem we were previously using and received it Saturday morning. ISP is supplying higher speed internet and Motorola unit wasn’t capable of achieving.

Connected SB8200 to TP-Link S4 that we had connected to the Motorola unit before (and working) and while I can connect to the Wi-Fi network, I get the error message no internet. Connect to the SB8200 through an Ethernet cable to my laptop ThinkPad hub and I get internet no problems.

Talked to Tech Support last night and they told me I can’t have two Ethernet connections at the same time with the SB8200 unless I get the second port activated by ISP. A little odd considering we had two Ethernet connections with the Motorola unit and no problems.

Has anyone had any success with connecting SB8200 with TP-Link S4 mesh system and getting Wi-Fi to work. Not particularly tech savvy so would need a dumbed down version of how to to get me through it. Tech Support weren’t really helpful last night I’m afraid.

Hi  kierobi,

Yes, the tech support was correct, let us see the sb8200 in detail, the arris sb8200 is a DOCSIS 3.1 cable modem that provides high-speed internet access .and is equipped with two-gigabit ethernet ports, each capable of supporting speeds of up to 1 Gbps.

Here's how the two Ethernet ports on the ARRIS SB8200 can be used:

  1. Ethernet Port 1: This port can be activated to connect the cable modem to a Wi-Fi router with multiple Ethernet ports. By connecting the cable modem to a router, you can create a local network and provide Wi-Fi connectivity to multiple devices within your home or office. The router will handle the distribution of IP addresses to the devices connected to it via Wi-Fi or Ethernet.

  2. Ethernet Port 2: The second Ethernet port can be activated to connect to a different device directly, such as a computer, gaming console, or any other device that requires an internet connection. When you connect a device to this port, the cable modem will assign a separate IP address to that device, allowing it to access the internet independently.

Each Ethernet port on the cable modem can indeed be associated with a different IP address,.

Currently, the modem is connected to the laptop and you can connect to the Internet. This shows that modem can provide a proper IP address so, check with your router provider TP-Link S4 for further troubleshooting.

Hope this helps. Please be free if you have questions .
