One year old modem, worked fine until two months ago, then dropped every so often. Three days ago it dropped and will not connect on reboot.  Called Cox, they declared it not working and gave me a loaner.  Tried swapping back the SB8200 and it still has the same problem.  Appears to boot correctly, but seem slower than I remember.

I’m very confused about what you are trying to ask...

> Called Cox, they declared it not working and gave me a loaner.  Tried swapping back the SB8200 and it still has the same problem.

You’re saying your SB8200 wasn’t working, so you called your provider and they loaned you a different device? Does the device they loaned you work or does it not work? And then you disconnected the device they gave you and reconnected your SB8200 and it doesn’t work? Is that what you’re saying? If your SB8200 was the problem, then of course it wouldn’t work if you reconnected it. (Unless I’m not understanding.)

>  Appears to boot correctly, but seem slower than I remember.

What device appears to boot correctly but seems slower than you remember? The device they loaned you, or your non-working SB8200?

Ok, sorry for the confusion, I thought it was straight-forward.

  1.  I called Cox because we no longer had internet.
  2. They came and determined the SB8200 modem was the problem.
  3. Cox installed a loaner modem and internet to our network was restored.
  4. In order to double check it wasn’t some random issue I reinstalled the SB8200 and there is no internet coming through to the network.
  5. Switched back to the Cox provided modem and internet is back, so the cause is something not right with the SB8200.
  6. Although I may be remembering it wrongly, the boot sequence for the SB8200 seems slower than I recall.

I presume the SB8200 unit is defective and needs replacement.

If the modem they provided you gives you access to the internet, then you know the cable connection is working.

If you remove the Cox-provided modem and reconnect your SB8200, keep in mind you have to activate it on their network. In the old days you would call customer service and tell them the MAC address of your modem and they could activate; nowadays I believe you can use a phone app. In other words whatever modem you use (loaner or not) it has to be activated on their network.

Are you able to activate your SB8200 after reconnecting it?

Thanks for your reply @wstewart11   I had forgotten I needed to have Cox reinstate my modem after they registered theirs.   So tonight I spent nearly two hours on the phone with Cox doing just that to confirm or deny the modem was the culprit  After waiting on the phone for 40 minutes the tech comes on trying to tell me I had to upgrade my plan to use my original modem. I told them no, I already had been using my own modem for nearly three decades, and the service tech hung up on me.  I called again and waited another hour on hold, but used that time to research if Verizon is available in my area now, then I hung up  So, I will never know if this modem is working correctly or not.  I suspect it works fine and something on Cox’s end was messed up and the tech who showed up just took the simple approach and installed one of theirs which I now have to rent from them.

Soooo, Verizon 5G Home Internet now has a new customer as of this evening and Cox can go f themselves.  We have had so many issues with Cox over the years and I’ve purchased several new modems when they claimed they didn’t work. I think it’s just a scam they have and suspect the modems were fine.

Sorry for the rant, I guess I will just keep this modem, or take it out in a field and give it the Office Space printer treatment in honor of Cox.

It has been my unfortunate experience that cable ISPs have very poor phone tech support, and often I need to call back several times until I am able to speak to a representative that actually understands what they are supposed to support (as opposed to following some kind of script). You might also check if your provider has a phone app that allows you to specify the device MAC address for activation.

Yes, ISP’s are steadily getting worse and worse customer service.  Unfortunately the phone app does not allow activation so you are stuck with having to call. They are clearly making it more difficult to do activation, in the past it was really quick and easy to do.  Anyway, I’m going to see how well the Verizon service is.  In the end, Verizon will be $5 cheaper than Cox, provides the modem and included YouTube premium which is a nice bonus.
