What download speed should I expect?

My ISP, Xfinity, has me on a 600mbps download 35mbps upload plan. When using WiFi on the 5G channel sitting 4 feet from the router with no physical barriers between the router and computer, the highest download speed achieved using the Xfinity speed test is 270mbps download. I am not expecting 600 but I would have expected something better than half the plan speed. What is reasonable? Is there anything I can do with the router to make improvements to the download speed?

What router do you have? Is it the SBG10?

What device are you testing on?

Those are key.

Even so, actual throughput is usually around 55-65% of what your link speed is. So its something to keep in mind.

Yes, the SBG10.

Testing on a Lenovo laptop.

I did a hard reset of the SBG10 and hit +550mbps under the same conditions.

Now my issue is that I’m getting an error message while setting up the app. 0000-1613. Searching FAQs says use a different phone.

The speed plan you have subscribed to with Xfinity is not compatible with your current model, as the provider has approved a maximum download speed of 392 Mbps for this device. Therefore, you will need to downgrade your speed plan with Xfinity in order for the gateway to function properly.

For your reference, please refer to the link below for the Xfinity‑approved speed plans

Wait wait wait...   so the device is good for 600mbps but the provider throttles it?

Even with that, I was able to get +550mbps after a hard reset of my router.

I cannot get the app to manage the router. In the setup I get an error 0000-1016.

Yes, since the internet service provider delivers service to modems and gateways, they approve and determine the supported speed plans. Additionally, error code 0000‑1016 indicates that multiple unsuccessful attempts have been made to sign in using the verification code.

You will need to wait approximately 30 minutes for the verification attempts to reset, or you can reinstall the app and sign in using a different email address.
