I have a SBG7400AC2 cable modem and right now it is at 5.0 ghz but I need to switch back to 2.4ghz because of a Wi-Fi enabled thermostat only will work with the slower speed.

Its dual band. Both should be broadcasting.
Did you set them with the same ssid? If so, you could always go in and change one
