Is it common problem with surfboard modem with ethernet ports? I have purchased SBG8300 in 2024 and put in service in May-2026. Initially 2 ethernet ports quit working and I switched my ethernet to a working port. Last week remaining 2 ports quit working. Wi-Fi is working as normal. I have my internet service with Xfinity. I am thinking to call Xfinity to ship their own modem to get rid of SBG8300. I have lost a quite a bit of money on SGB8300. Very disappointed.

Amansidhu78,

Both Arris and the cable company have us by the tied. Arris says that the internet service provider is the one to supply device updates. The internet service provider says that Arris should do the system updates. Neither party wants to own up to their (un)respected obligations to us the customer. I am on SBG8300 number 3, The 1st could not get the updates as stated earlier, purchased another which was destroyed by a lightning strike. Silly me went ahead and replaced it with another SBG8300. I think this will be the last Arris for me. This is just my opinion, Arris wants to always sell you a new modem with the latest updates, however, The internet service provider want you to always have to rent from them so that you will have the latest and greatest updates. Figure out the cost of the new modem purchase and the rental fees, totally based on how long the Arris continues to operate properly, then make your decision based on the better of the 2, if there will ever be one.

Please try changing the Ethernet cable, and consider swapping the ends to see if that helps.

To check the Ethernet port status, you can connect the modem directly to a computer and check the IP address without the coaxial cable connected.

To check the IP address on a Windows computer, please follow these steps:

  1. Press the Windows button + the letter R on your keyboard to open the "Run" command box.
  2. In the box, type "CMD" and press Enter.
  3. A black screen will appear. Type "ipconfig" and press Enter.
  4. Under the category 'Ethernet adapter Ethernet,' you’ll find the IPv4 address.

To check the IP address on a Mac:

  1. Click on the Apple menu.
  2. Then, select System Preferences or System Settings.
  3. Navigate to Networks and click on the Ethernet option to view the IP address.
  4. If you're using an adapter, you’ll see an option for USB under Networks.

If the IP address starts with 169.254.., or if the media state shows 'disconnected' or the category is blank, there could be an issue with the port itself.
