When first setting up the SVG2482AC modem to work with Xfinity/comcast, I loggen in to 10.0.0.1 using “admin” and “password.”  When it prompted me to change the password, I did using the same password that I used on my old Arris TG862G modem (which I have physically written down in my password book.)  After logging in again using the changed password, I renamed both WiFi networks and set new passwords for each.  During the (very long) time it was taking Xfinity to get the internet working, I logged in to the modem using the new password at least two more times, visually confirming that the password was exactly as I had it written in my log book.   After Xfinity gave up trying to get the telephone line to work (everything else worked fine), they scheduled to have a technician come out.  Why they couldn’t get it to work puzzles me, as it worked just fine (for over 10 years) with the older Arris TG862 modem.

The next time I tried to login to the SVG2482AC modem, it said the password was incorrect.  This was impossible, as I had just used it, and I visually checking it that it was being typed correctly.   After six failed attempts, I resorted to doing a hard factory reset.  I have done this 5 times. the last two of which I unplugged everything from the modem (and took out the battery that I had for it) waited 10 minutes, then plugged only the power cord in, while holding the reset button down for 60 seconds.  While the hard reset did reset both WiFi names (and passwords), it absolutely will NOT let me log in using the “admin” username and “password” (PASSWORD.)  Why does this nearly new modem not reset the password?  Is it broken, or how can it be fixed?  And PLEASE don’t explain the same old way of how to do a factory reset for the admin password.   IT DOES NOT WORK !!!!

It appears that the gateway is being properly factory reset. We recommend disconnecting the coaxial cable and then performing a factory reset by holding the reset button for 30 seconds. After the reset, you should see the default network name and password.

Note: To establish an internet connection with the SVG2482AC, you must change the default Wi-Fi name and password after completing activation through Xfinity

Given what I learned (and have experienced) yesterday, this is not the correct answer.  What it true, is what Xfinity can (and did) do is to block normal retail admin password access to the router.  This is precisely why it was NOT possible (nor would it ever be, no matter what procedure is followed) to reset the “admin” user password to “password” to access the router.  I know this for a fact, as after several hours (literally) of working on resolving this with Xfinity, and finally getting the answer from a savvy enough supervisor that was there… they provided me with a workaround for it.

It’s a shame that I couldn’t find this answer anywhere on the Internet and that it took MANY hours of time to find such an honest answer to the issue.
