...from earlier post by Hugh:

“The next time I tried to login to the SVG2482AC modem, it said the password was incorrect.  This was impossible, as I had just used it, and I visually checking it that it was being typed correctly.   After six failed attempts, I resorted to doing a hard factory reset.  I have done this 5 times. the last two of which I unplugged everything from the modem (and took out the battery that I had for it) waited 10 minutes, then plugged only the power cord in, while holding the reset button down for 60 seconds.  While the hard reset did reset both WiFi names (and passwords), it absolutely will NOT let me log in using the “admin” username and “password” (PASSWORD.)  Why does this nearly new modem not reset the password?  Is it broken, or how can it be fixed?  And PLEASE don’t explain the same old way of how to do a factory reset for the admin password.   IT DOES NOT WORK !!!!”

moderator response:

It appears that the gateway is being properly factory reset. We recommend disconnecting the coaxial cable and then performing a factory reset by holding the reset button for 30 seconds. After the reset, you should see the default network name and password.

Given what I learned (and have experienced) yesterday, this is not the correct answer.  What is true, is what Xfinity can (and did) do is to block normal retail admin password access to the router.  This is precisely why it was NOT possible (nor would it ever be, no matter what procedure is followed) to reset the “admin” user password to “password” to access the router.  I know this for a fact, as after several hours (literally) of working on resolving this with Xfinity, and finally getting the answer from a savvy enough supervisor that was there… they provided me with a workaround for it.

It’s a shame that I couldn’t find this answer anywhere on the Internet and that it took MANY hours of time to find such an honest answer to the issue.

...my 2 cents:

Hey Hugh, stumbled onto your post about connecting to the modem via ethernet using the ‘admin/password’ combination….   I’ve experienced some strange stuff with my SVG also, after Comcast messed with it, despite my specific request that they DON’T reset it…..

Background:  We both share the SVG2482AC as our gateway to Comcast and I assume, like me, you are also using the router function to handle your WI-FI broadcast and perhaps one or more of the ethernet jacks for a TV, or Roku, or desktop pc?  I also have a VOIP ‘landline’ from Comcast that the SVG handles quite well.  In my house, I’m (bridge mode) meshing 2 additional routers off of the SVG, both different brand names, to utilize both their additional ethernet ports as well as using them as WI-FI extenders.  Both additional routers are connected to the SVG via CAT5 ethernet connections and share similar passwords (which I fully document as I use a lot of static IP addresses on my network).

Somehow, my SVG password got strangely changed to an unknown password and I couldn’t gain access.  I tried multiple combinations of both user ID & password, to no avail.  3 factory resets (including disconnecting the coax while standing on one foot, holding my tongue just right, etc., etc., etc.) failed to get me in with ‘admin/password’.

I finally got access using ‘admin’ and the WIFI password printed on the label.

So, 3 weird, unexplainable events - initial change of JUST my unique password; the factory resets did NOT result in ‘admin/password’ access; and success was finally achieved with ‘admin’ and ‘(wifi password)’ off of the label on the side of the SVG.

I changed the password back to my unique one and as of this morning, have continued to regain access with my unique settings.

Very strange behavior, indeed.

I am curious as to what you were told by the Comcast supervisor and how it might relate to this strange behavior.  Give me a shout back if you get around to it...
