as far as I’m aware, these can be used as a modem or a modem/router combo device as they don’t have a wan port. 

These devices typically do not have a WAN port because they directly connect to the internet service line. Instead, they often provide multiple LAN (Local Area Network) ports and Wi-Fi capability for local network access.
