Tried and failed to upgrade from SB8200 to S34 on Cox cable network

I tried over two days to replace my working SB8200 on my home network with a new S34. My ISP is Cox. On the first day I tried many times to activate it over the phone to a Cox technician. The Cox tech said she could see the S34 activated on her end. On my end I saw a solid blue LED indicator, but I got no connection to my wired ethernet LAN or my eero PRO wi-fi router. On the second day a Cox technician came to help. He worked for over an hour trying various things, but got the same result.  Finally he replaced the S34 with a Cox Panorama modem/wi-fi router and got the system working as it was with my SB8200 router. Now, however, I am stuck paying rent for Cox’s equipment, so I am not done trying to solve my problem. So, a few questions: (Question 1) Does the S34 indeed provide a performance upgrade over the SB8200? I have Gigablast service from Cox, a sprawling LAN covering 6,000 sq ft, and an eero PRO wi-fi mesh network with 6 routers total. I am planning to upgrade the eero PRO gateway, the outdoor router, and one additional router in a high traffic area with eero Max 7 and eero Outdoor 7. (Question 2) I read on the Cox service site that the 2 ports on the S34 - (1) 1GbE port plus (1) 2.5GbE port - can only be used one at a time, not together. I am planning to run a cable from the 1GbE port to my eero gateway wi-fi router and a second cable to my Netgear powered switch that is the front end of my wired LAN. But if the ports on the S34 cannot be used together, I’m not sure this is an improvement over my SB8200 with its (2) 1GbE ports. (Question 3) I was unaware of the reset button while trying to activate my S34. The Cox tech was also unaware. Might the use of this help to make the 2 ethernet ports active?

I’ll try and answer them.

  1. the S34 is approved up to cox’s 2 gig plan. The SB8200 is only up to gigabit. So if you have 2 gig, yet it’ll be an improvement. If you only have 1 gig, then no it won’t.
  2. Cox only assigns 1 public IP address to consumer accounts. The modem takes that and assigns it to the router. The router then assigns private ip addresses to devices. For that reason, only 1 device can be connected to the modem for either the S34 or SB8200. The device itself supports connecting more, COX doesn’t. Most major ISP’s are the same with this. Its a rare ISP that will assign more than 1 public ip address or you have to be on a business class line
  3. No. Resetting it won’t make it active.

Much depends on your situation. If you’re paying for 500-1gig service, upgrading modems isn’t much benefit. If you’re paying for 2 gig, then you want a modem with a multigig port. sounds like you have a pretty solid setup already with your Eero setup. and it should do fine for 1 gig service. Upgrading to eero 7 won’t get you a whole lot more speed. You might see better gains by finding a way to hardwire in the satellites versus a whole new system
