I called my provider and the firmware update failed. Is there another way to update the firmware.

No. The firmware is part of the provisioning when you setup service. 

Its not something user updateable or managed. 

Why do you think its an issue? 

Current setup: Netgear CM3000-->Netgear RBE973S-->2.5gig tp-link switch, Xfinity 2.4gig/350mbps
