September 2024 I ended Dynamic DNS service from dyndns (seemingly no longer working) and set up my G34 DDNS settings correctly with https://freedns.afraid.org/

To confirm it was working, I manually set an incorrect address at freedns.

Then I disconnected the G34 coax (simulating a network outage) and reconnected. After some time freedns showed the correct address so the DDNS update that ran after the cable network was restored must have worked.

But now, November 2024, Comcast has apparently once again renumbered the network. freedns does not have the new address, but retains the address from September. I can reach a host inside the G34 local network (at a remote location) so I have discovered the newly assigned IP address from Comcast. But freedns does not have it, so DDNS updates are not arriving.

Is it possible the November 2023 firmware update which broke port forwarding has minimized DDNS updates in some way?

Please tell me how often DDNS updates are sent, after power up?

Firmware updates are like automatic process. ARRIS develops the software update and makes it available to service providers.  The service providers qualify, test, and distribute the software update to devices on their network.  ARRIS has limited control or visibility on distribution by the service providers.

The internet service provider sends an IP to the modem at specific intervals, but the exact timing of these changes is not known and can only be provided by the service provider. Since the IP changes frequently, updating the firmware will not impact the modem's configuration. Instead, you can try restarting the modem and setting up the DNS. After making these changes, monitor the connection for the next 24 hours.

I cannot restart the modem, it is at a remote location.

You reply has nothing to do with my question. I am not trying to change DNS settings. I am asking about DDNS updates.

“I can reach a host inside the G34 local network (at a remote location) so I have discovered the newly assigned IP address from Comcast. But freedns does not have it, so DDNS updates are not arriving.”

Regarding the DDNS setup, I would suggest following the instructions on the below given link:

Did that. Even entered two different Dynamic DNS providers.

Not working now. Maybe when I go there in a few days, but the point is it is supposed to work remotely!

Requestin again: Please tell me how often DDNS updates are sent, after power up?

Hello @perrybo,

Thank you for reaching out to the community.  The DDNS update is performed:

  • at boot-up
  • in the event of connection errors (will update every 5 minutes)
  • every 24 days

Other errors like username/password/URL errors, will not trigger the retry.
