I was told by cox communications that my ip address  is bad and I need a new one. How do I do that

Why would they tell you something like that? 

The SB6190 is a modem only device. They assign the ip address to it and its usually a dynamic address meaning they can change it periodically .

I’m more curious why they told you something like that? Seems like they were trying to get you off the line.
