Is it possible to use a G34 modem/router to create a mesh network?  I’d like to simply buy a 2nd wifi router, but I’m assuming that if I do that, each router would have to have its own network name, and couldn’t be shared like I understand a mesh network to be.

The G34 does not have MESH capabilities. You should get a Wi-Fi AP (access point) instead of a router.  The access point is solely for Wi-Fi connection purposes and any clients that connects to it would be in the G34’s network.
