I only want to use the app to Rename my network and create a custom password other than the stock name and password that came with my G36

are you using random mac/IP address on your phone? Try disabling that. 

Or if you’re using any built in vpn, make sure its disabled

The app which you are trying is the outdated. I suggest you to install Surfboard central app from play store or Istore.
