Hi Everyone,

I have a couple of years-old Netgear router and a modem supplied by Comcast. I also have a teenage son who just can’t seem to learn when enough online gaming is enough. He connects directly to the modem via a CAT cable to avoid Wi-Fi lag, which means the options in the Netgear app for shutting off access don't apply since they only control the router.

Aside from physically unplugging the modem, I’m looking for a way to remotely disable his access via the CAT cable, or I’m open to getting a new modem that allows for this. Ideally, I’d like a solution that lets me control it from the comfort of my bed. It’s been a long battle, and I’m tired of trying to instill personal responsibility—I'm looking for a switch solution. Any suggestions, especially regarding managing IP addresses and router settings?

I’d look at a smart managed switch that you can disable ports on it through the app.

Hi plemans,

A smart managed switch with app-based control sounds like a solid option! Alongside this, I'm also considering managing his connection through IP and router settings. Do you have any specific switch models in mind that work seamlessly with Comcast, allowing for easy port disabling through a smartphone app?

Additionally, I’d be interested in hearing if you have tips on managing IP addresses for connected devices—either through the switch or router. My goal is to remotely control his specific IP or port, ideally in a way that’s quick to adjust without affecting other devices on the network. If you've found success with a particular brand or setup that combines both switch control and IP management through the router, I’d love to hear your recommendations!

Hi,

A smart managed switch is perfect for controlling your son’s access. It allows you to manage each port individually and assign specific IP addresses, letting you disable his connection while keeping others active. Brands like Netgear and TP-Link offer models with app control, making it easy to adjust settings from your router remotely.
