Question

Wifi Somker will not connect to SBG8300 Router

Forum|alt.badge.img

I have owned a T25 router in Texas for about 4 years now and it has worked flawlessly for the entire time I’ve owned it.  However, a new problem has popped up.

I purchased a wifi enabled pellet smoker made by Recteq.  The smoker will not connect to my router.  I have reached out to Recteq’s technical support half a dozen times and they cannot resolve it.  What they are telling me is that something with the router is preventing the smoker from connecting (they confirmed this when the smoker will attach to my secondary cell phone’s hotspot).

They informed me that there is something with the router blocking the smoker from connecting.  I have gone into my router dashboard via the IP address and have confirmed that the “blocked list” button is turned off (and even if it was on, there are no devices or addresses in the list).  I have also lowered my firewall protection to the lowest setting allowed.  The smoker simply won’t connect.

Does anyone have an idea why this might be and how might I remedy this issue?  I bought this smoker due to the fact that I can remotely monitor the 13 hour briskets I smoke regularly, but it simply won’t let me connect.

Any assistance is appreciated.  Thanks in advance.

The T25 is a cable modem without built-in Wi-Fi capabilities. In this case, you must be using a separate Wi-Fi router connected to the T25 modem. Could you please let us know the make and model of your Wi-Fi router?

Note: To connect the Wi-Fi smoke detector, it must go through the Wi-Fi router.

What actual router do you have?

Thank you both for your responses.  I simply looked at the photos of the different categories of routers on the Arris forums and selected the T25 as it resembled my router more than the other categories did.

The router model number is SBG8300.  The device I am attempting to connect is not a smoke detector, but rather a smoker (like a grill, but uses smoke to cook proteins rather than open flame).  The remainder of the initial post is accurate.

Is there any way to edit the title of the post to remove the T25 reference and replace it with the SBG8300 model name?

We have updated your product title from T25 to SBG8300.

Could you please confirm which network you're trying to connect your pellet smoker to?

Also, let us know what error message you received during the Wi-Fi setup process.

Before diving into detailed troubleshooting, let's check a couple of things:

  • Check if the grill is already paired: It’s possible the grill is already connected to Wi-Fi.

  • Demo Mode: On the grill’s controller, ensure that Demo Mode is turned off, as this can prevent proper network connection.

You can try changing the security mode by login the GUI web portal through 192.168.0.1

Once you logged in, go to Connection > Wifi > Networks > Edit for 2.4 GHz. Change the security mode to WPA/WPA2-PSK (TKIP/AES).

Thank you for the response.  As noted in my original post, the smoker will NOT connect to wifi.  It is not connected to the wifi.  It is not in Demo Mode as it has no Demo Mode.

Additionally, my 2.4ghz security mode is set to WPA/WPA2-PSK (TKIP/AES).

As noted in my original post, I have spent nearly 6 full hours attempting to connect it to wifi, with 4 of those hours actively spent with tech support from the smoker manufacturer.

Also as noted in my original post, I have gone to the portal via IP address and my blocked list is empty and the blocked list is turned off.  I also have the firewall set to the lowest security possible.

Also as noted in my original post, the smoker simply times out when attempting to connect.  It says “connection failed” on the smoker.  Both the smoker and the router are dual band.  I have attempted to connect via 2.4ghz and 5ghz, resetting the smoker wifi after each attempt.  It simply won’t connect.

Also as noted in my original post, I can use one of my two cell phones to create a hotspot and the smoker immediately connects to the hotspot.  This indicates that there is not an issue with the smoker wifi.  It is DEFINITELY an Arris wifi router issue.

Now, with this information, what options might I have?  Thanks in advance for any guidance.

I understand that you're unable to connect the Smoker to Wi-Fi. Since you've already updated the security mode, I recommend trying to change the Wi-Fi channels next. You can follow the steps in the link below:

http://arris.force.com/consumers/articles/General_FAQs/SBG8300-Changing-the-Wi-Fi-Channel

If the issue persists after changing the channels, I recommend reaching out to the smoker's manufacturer for further assistance.

Since all other devices are connecting to Wi-Fi and working properly with the SBG8300, the issue does not appear to be with the modem.

Thank you for your reply.  I clicked the link for the steps to change the wifi channels, but I get an error that the site is down.  I will keep trying today until it comes back up (hopefully today).  If that doesn’t work, I will follow up again with the smoker manufacturer.  I appreciate your assistance.

also make sure there aren’t any special characters or spaces in the ssid/password. some of those basic IoT devices like smokers stuggle with them.

You can try setting up a guest network with simplified ssid/password and see if it’ll connect

plemans - thanks for the reply.  No special characters, only letters (capital and lower case) and numbers.  I appreciate the assistance and efforts to diagnose the problem.
