I have a Surfboard SB6190 modem. I understand the ISP has to do any firmware updating but is there a way to determine if the firmware is up to date?

Yes you are right, only the internet service provider can send updates to the modem and you have option to check the current firmware version on the modem settings page or GUI. To confirm the latest version of firmware you need to check with your ISP only.
